New York City

Last week it was my father-in-law’s birthday. Let’s call him Ian for that is his name. My wife and I, along with a few other close family members, caught a flight to NYC to spend a few days in the city to celebrate Ian’s 60th birthday. He’s travelled other countries but somehow never made it to the US and always wanted to. We hired a limo and arrived in style at Hotel 30 30, right in the centre of everything! The rooms were small but being right at the heart of the city was amazing! We had burgers at Famous Dave’s on night 1 whilst trying desperately not to face plant into our food from jet lag. We ate like kings at Bond 45 on night 2 before catching the Phantom of the Opera on Broadway (which somehow none of us had seen before). We explored the city from Central Park (86th Street-ish) down to the Statue of Liberty. We saw the amazing cityscape from the Empire State and the top of the rock (the Rockefeller to you and me). Some days our feet felt like walked a zillion miles, but it was so worth it. Ground Zero is very much under construction now but still quite a moving place to see. Having seen the height of the Empire State, its hard to fathom how tall the Twin Towers actually were. Amazing. Oh and the photo of the workers sat on the steel girder has me in awe everytime I see it.

New York. Quite honestly I’ve never seen so many cabs or heard the car horn used so liberally! Maybe it’s because it’s been in so many movies. Maybe it’s the two people I passed on the street singing quite loudly whilst walking someplace or photographing something. Maybe its the steam coming out of the ground or the subway rumbling just a few feet below the road. Whatever it is, New York City is a special place. Exciting. Beautiful. Tall. Loud.

We finished the trip with an awesome last night dinner at Gordon Ramsay’s “Maze at the London”. Quite possibly the best meal I’ve ever had.

San Francisco

I took a trip to San Francisco back in 2008 on business. It was a two week stay and during the middle weekend, I decided to hire a bike and go cycling with my camera. I had no idea where I was going, I just knew that I wanted to see the Golden Gate bridge, the Pacific and Geary Boulevard. I marvelled to see my surname on the signs, embedded in the concrete and on shop fronts, but I hadn’t realised how long Geary Boulevard was.

I ended up cycling 17 miles taking in my chosen sights that day.

This culminated in an appetite I’ve never known before which I satisfied at Jonny Rocket’s diner with two, yes two chocolate milkshakes, a burger and fries. I overate and overdrank but they were damn good shakes.

I went to India with a friend for another friend’s wedding. While we were there, we took in the sights from the Taj Mahal, through Delhi and Agra Fort. Still shooting film at the moment as I’m just getting used to my new S2. Plus, India is quite… tricky to travel in for white westerners…

Australia

I was away for three months, my first time properly away from home. I travelled on my own, my aim to meet new people and see life in a new way. I flew directly to Sydney where I spent a couple of weeks chilling on the beach before beginning the 6 week journey up the east coast, taking in Byron Bay, Brisbane, Fraser Island, Cairns and Cape Tribulation. There was a very long journey through mostly nothing down the centre of Australia from Uluru to Adelaide, along the Great Ocean Road and back to Sydney. I was shooting slide film back then so here are the best scanned shots from the trip…
